EVALUATING THE PROBLEM
A Complete Curriculum
We know that Algebra 1 is a critical “gateway course” in K12, and that success in Algebra 1 is a predictor of on-time graduation rates, success in higher-level mathematics, and post-secondary success. We also know there are widening achievement and opportunity gaps among historically underrepresented minority and economically disadvantaged students, acutely exacerbated by pandemic-related learning disruptions. OpenStax Algebra 1 curriculum aims to improve teaching and learning for all students.
Algebra 1 by OpenStax is a high-quality, standards-aligned, tier 1 curriculum. OpenStax Algebra 1 is 100% aligned to the TEKS and ELPS and received unanimous approval from the Texas State Board of Education!
OpenStax Algebra 1 is easy to implement, supportive of diverse learners, and promotes student engagement by incorporating interactive tools and videos based on proven principles of multimedia learning and instructional design. Our curriculum has been designed to support teachers and students with units, lessons, assessments, and teacher support guides to span the academic year.

A RE-IMAGINED CURRICULUM
Why OpenStax Algebra 1 Curriculum?
OpenStax Algebra 1 Curriculum is a high-quality instruction material (HQIM) fully aligned to the TEKS and ELPS. Algebra 1 is designed in accordance with best practices in learning science research. Multimedia learning theory, cognitive load theory, spaced retrieval practice, and student motivation and persistence all play heavily in the design of our curriculum. Dr. Katie Bainbridge leads our research and development, placing these concepts into real-world contexts and problems that allow students a more nuanced understanding of the concepts behind equations. OpenStax Algebra 1 curriculum prioritizes non-graded practice, exploratory activities, and opportunities for cooperative discovery to help students develop mathematical literacy and strengthen mathematical identity. OpenStax Algebra 1 curriculum has been developed to support all learners, including emerging bilingual learners, students with disabilities, and students who need additional support for unfinished learning. OpenStax Algebra 1 curriculum includes robust implementation support to provide teachers with pedagogical tools and instructional resources to meet the needs of high-variance classrooms.
