RAISE Algebra 1 Curriculum is an innovative curriculum designed to improve Algebra 1 teaching and student learning. Our goal is to increase student achievement in Algebra with an open education resource (OER) that is standards-aligned, easy to implement, supportive of diverse learners, and engaging for students. RAISE Algebra 1 Curriculum is an initiative of Rice University’s OpenStax, a free digital curriculum provider for secondary and higher education.

OpenStax & RAISE Algebra 1 Curriculum

RAISE Algebra 1 Curriculum is an initiative of Rice University's OpenStax, a free digital curriculum provider for secondary and higher education. Since 2012, OpenStax has been dedicated to the goal of equitable student success by providing students universal access to knowledge, support for teaching and learning, and learning science research to advance our understanding of effective digital learning.

OpenStax has served millions of students globally, including nearly 3 million K12 students. Our curriculum resources are used in over 150 countries and have saved K12 schools and teachers over $200 million to date. OpenStax educational materials have helped students and teachers access high-quality, free resources in over 15,000 K12 schools.

WHY ALGEBRA 1

Transforming Algebra 1 Classrooms

There are widening achievement and opportunity gaps among students in our K12 education system. In particular, data for underrepresented minority and economically disadvantaged students shows they face unique challenges and often struggle to overcome these obstacles in secondary school and beyond. Many students find themselves overwhelmed by contending with the rigor of STEM courses like Algebra 1 while also working to overcome achievement gaps and pandemic-related learning setbacks.

Identified as a critical “gateway course,” Algebra 1 disproportionately impacts marginalized student populations with drop-off and graduation rates that in turn limit higher education and professional opportunities. RAISE Algebra 1 Curriculum is a standards-aligned, digital curriculum designed incorporating principles of learning science and multimedia design theory. RAISE Algebra 1 Curriculum prioritizes not graded practice, exploratory activities, and opportunities for collaborative discourse to help students develop mathematical literacy and strengthen mathematical identity. 

RAISE Algebra 1 Curriculum offers instructors robust front-matter, on-demand implementation support, and scaffolding resources for each unit. RAISE has been developed to support all learners, including emerging bilingual learners, students with disabilities, and students who need additional support. 

Free, Peer-Reviewed, Comprehensive Learning Materials

RAISE Algebra 1 Curriculum has been created to provide a free, interactive Algebra 1 course for all students. The course covers all skills and content needed for students to succeed in an algebraic reasoning course, including end-of-course cumulative exams and standardized tests, like STAAR. The course has been built to leverage proven pedagogical methods and multimedia learning strategies and is aligned with TEKS and the Common Core state standards (CCSS), as well as ELPS and WIDA to support English language learners.

Open Educational Resource

RAISE Algebra 1 Curriculum is an open educational resource. This means it is 100% free for teachers and students to use. Open educational resources are teaching, learning, and research materials in any medium that reside in the public domain or have been released under an open license that permits no-cost access, use, adaptation, and redistribution by others with no restrictions.
